Liptovský Mikuláš

The Canadian Under-23 and Junior teams have all arrived in Liptovský Mikuláš and we are busy preparing for the racing which starts a week from today. Aside from our on water workouts, we’ve been trying to get out and see some sights and have a bit of fun. As we get closer to the race and spend less time on the water, recovery sessions such as mini golf or go karting will become even more important. IMG_0606

Leading the pack, with Liam and AJ close behind.

The town is situated in the beautiful Liptov region and our team runs have taken us through some beautiful scenery. Last week I decided to go for a solo run up the hill behind our hotel and stumbled upon a war monument dedicated to the memory of Russian and Czechoslovak soldiers who had fought in a battle for the town during the Second World War. Háj-Nicovô is a place of eternal rest of 1,386 soldiers – servicemen of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps who died in battle of Liptovký Mikuláš in 1945. The military cemetery was built in 1950 and is the biggest in the territory of the former Czechoslovakia.

The weather has been ideal for training here with blue skies and sun almost everyday. After a cold and wet last few months of training, it feels like summer has finally arrived. The course here has two possible channels that can be run. The race will be on the left channel, having been here and paddled the right channel in 2011 its a familiar feeling and I’m excited to race here again. Below are some shots of myself, Cam, Liam, and AJ paddling.
