Unpacking the Olympic Boat

Unwrapping a brand new kayak might just be the best thing in the world. Michal, Cam, and I arrived at Heathrow after a smooth flight and cruised straight over to the address where we were picking up our boats. Patricia, who is the Canadian Olympic Committee’s London contact, was kind enough to keep our boats safe in her backyard and make us lunch, thanks Pat!  The boats are light and stiff and our design worked out perfectly! The first session on the water was a bit rough as I worked out the kinks in the new outfitting, but things started to come together in the second as I got used to the new boat. It was also the first time paddling on the Olympic course after getting laser eye surgery. For those of you who might not know, paddling whitewater with contact lenses is a bit like driving in the rain without windshield wipers. Now that I don’t have to worry about seeing the gates, I can focus on just getting through them fast! Eight more days of training here in London then off to Barcelona for World Cup #2 in Pau, France and World Cup #3 in Seu D’Urgell, Spain.
